Homemade Everything Bagels Recipe
Only a few basic Ingredients are needed to create these chewy and flavourful Everything Bagels at home.
These Bagels are a fusion between New York and Montreal styles as we used All-Purpose Flour and boiled them in Water with Honey.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Baking Time: 20 minutes
Equipment: Baking Sheet, Parchment Paper
Making Bagels at home:
Start by hydrating Active Dry Yeast.
In a small bowl or cup combine:
1 tbsp Sugar
1 tbsp Flour
1/3 cup (80 ml) Warm Water
2. Add 2 tsp (6 g) Active Dry Yeast. Leave it for about 10 minutes.
As the Yeast has risen and got bubbly, time to move on to the next step.
3. Make the Dough.
In a bowl combine:
2 1/2 cups (300 g) + 1/2 cups (60 g) to add if needed of All-Purpose Flour
1 tbsp (15 g) Sugar
1 tsp (5 g) Salt
4. Now add in the remaining 2/3 cup (170 ml) of Water and Activated Yeast.
5. Mix everything together and knead the Dough for 7-10 minutes.
It's ok if your Dough will be a little bit softer and stickier than mine. I used whole 3 cups of Flour at once and my dough was a little bit on the heavier side.
6. Form the Dough into a ball and transfer it into an oiled container. Oil the Dough as well.
Cover with lid or plastic wrap and let it sit for 1-2 hrs. I put mine into the oven with the lights on.
7. As the Dough has risen, enjoy the moment and punch it gently to release excess air.
8. Flatten the Dough a little bit and divide it into 6 pieces.
9. Form each piece into a ball. Let sit for 10 minutes. Mow make holes in them with your fingers. Please check our video recipe below for visual instructions.
10. In a pot, bring some Water to a boil. The amount of Water depends on your pot size. Just make sure that Bagels don't touch the bottom. And don't forget that the smaller the pot, the least amount of bagels will fit there at the same time. I can fit 3 Bagels in my pot, for example.
11. Add 1-2 tbsp of Honey into a pot (optional).
12. Boil each Bagel for 30 seconds per each side. You don't need to dry the Bagels, put them straight onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
13. Now make some simple Egg Wash.
Beat 1 Egg with 2-3 tbsp of Milk or Half&Half. Even Whipping Cream will work.
14. Brush Bagels with Egg Wash and top with Seasoning. I like to use TJ's Everything but the Bagel Seasoning. Or, sometimes, I use Poppy or Sesame Seeds only.
15. Bake at 425F (215C) for 20 minutes.
And that's it, enjoy!
Store them in an air-tight container.
We recommend eating Bagels with Cream Cheese and Salmon, it’s delicious!
