So, let's dive into this simple recipe!

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes

  • Baking time: 50 minutes

  • Equipment: baking dish, cutting board, knife, pot

Prepare the Potatoes:

  1. Begin by peeling and thinly slicing 1.7 lbs (800 g) Potatoes. We are using mandoline slicer. 2.

  2. Place the slices in a bowl of cold water.

Create the Creamy Sauce:

3. In a pot, combine:

  • 1 cup (200 ml) Half & Half

  • 2 cups (500 ml) Heavy Whipping Cream

4. Season the mixture with salt, nutmeg, and black pepper.

5. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil while stirring occasionally.

Parboil the Potatoes:

6. Add the potato slices to the creamy mixture.

7. Return the pot to the heat and continue cooking for another 15-20 minutes over medium-low heat. Avoid boiling the mixture; you want the potatoes to be easily pierced with a fork but not fully cooked.

8. Once the potatoes are partially cooked, remove them from the pot.

9. Allow the cream to simmer for an additional 5 minutes to thicken it slightly.

Layer the Potatoes:

10. Butter a baking dish generously with 1-2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Season the bottom of a dish.

11. Start by creating three layers of the partially cooked potato slices in the buttered and seasoned baking dish.

12. Between each layer, season with salt, nutmeg, black pepper, and garlic powder (or freshly minced garlic).

13. Pour the thickened cream sauce over the layered potatoes, ensuring they are well coated.

14. Cover the baking dish.

Bake the Potatoes:

15. Place the covered baking dish in the oven and bake for 45 minutes at 320°F (160°C).

16. After 45 minutes, uncover the dish and sprinkle 1 cup of Swiss or any other mild cheese evenly over the top

17. Follow this with a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.

18. Return the uncovered dish to the oven for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.

19. Allow your Potato Gratin to cool for a few minutes before serving to let the flavors meld together.

This Dauphinoise pairs well with a variety of main courses, making it a favorite for family dinners and special occasions alike. Give it a try, and you'll understand why this dish never goes out of style.

Enjoy!
